My hope is that these tween girl birthday party ideas will load you up with tons of inspiration for your celebration!
I have to admit I was stumped when thinking about what theme to use for Isabelle’s, my tween daughter, birthday dinner. We were having a low key family meal with close relatives. Still, I wanted the event to feel special and festive – and be true to her sparkly personality.
When I asked her favorite color in hopes that would spark an idea, she said teal. Hmmm … Okay. Not what I expected. Back to Pinterest.
One search led to another, and it finally hit me. DISCO! Perfect. I turned a disco bachelorette invitation I already had designed for my Etsy shop into a girl’s birthday invitation. Switched out one of the colors for teal. Voila! (btw – You can grab this invitation template for free. Keep scrolling to the end!)
Then, the search for the perfect party decorations began.

Tween Birthday Backdrop Decorations
Palette wise, we went with teal as our tween requested (of course!), muted pink, and golden yellow.
To create a focal point, we turned one wall into a backdrop complete with a balloon arch and mirror ball inspired fringe. The balloon arch did not come with disco balls, so I purchased these mylar balloons and sprinkled them throughout.
Balloon arch kits are a great way to save on party decorations. However, you do need to allow time to put them together. For example, this one took me about 2 hours from start to finish.
Tip: Start with the medium sized balloons. Then layer in the large balloons, placing them on the ends and “corners.” Lastly, fill in gaps with the smallest balloons.
To complete the backdrop, we placed a bar cart in the center. Presents were placed on the bottom of the cart and cake on the top. (We’ll get to this adorable cake in a moment!)
In case you’d like to recreate the look, here’s a link list:
- Balloon arch
- Mylar disco ball balloons
- Fringe backdrop
- Bar cart
- Disco balls cake topper
- Cake stand
- Cake server
- Napkin holder

Table Decorations
Weather cooperated for our event, and we took the party outside to eat dinner at our picnic table. In hindsight, I wish I would have thought through the centerpiece a little more. It fell a little flat. But the disco ball tumblers were a HUGE hit. By tying place cards to the straws, they doubled as place card holders.
For the centerpiece, we used a pink sequin table runner, teal glitter tulle, disco balls, and pampas grass. The pampas grass ended up being more dark blue than teal. It worked okay but wasn’t exactly what I was going for. Alas, no time to fix since we were hosting this party in the middle of a very busy week.
However, I was excited to repurpose the vases, which I DIYed for a baby shower earlier this year. Believe it or not, they are from the dollar store and originally clear glass! Check out the hack in this post.
Each place setting had a charger (mine are from Target and sold out, but these are similar and also from Target), dinner plate, salad plate, teal napkin, and disco ball tumbler. Lastly, mixing metals, I used my go-to gold flatware.
Underneath it all was a banquet-size linen tablecloth. Such a great investment if you entertain frequently. Love being able to mask unsightly metal legs on fold out tables, and, in this case, transform our picnic table.
Cake
How fun is this cake!? Our favorite local bakery, Rachel Bakes & Co, nailed it yet again.
Using our invitation as a starting point, they air brushed the wavy lines onto the side of the cake. Rather than writing a message on the cake, they used a larger board under it to add a message “Isabelle’s Funky 11th Disco”. Fun, right!?
To top it off, we added a these adorable disco balls.
Tip: Odd numbers in a triangle shape is almost always the best way to achieve visual balance. In this case, we used seven disco balls in a variety of sizes to get the look.
Menu
Sticking with our 70s theme, here is the menu we chose – inspired in part by what was often served in that decade and also some of our tween daughter’s favorites:
- Pimento cheese & crackers
- Deviled eggs
- Ham and cheese sliders
- Cheesy potatoes
- Fruit salad
- Veggie tray
Then, for the beverages, we offered guests:
- Palomas (for those over 21!)
- Squirt (for the tween and her under aged guests!)
