2022 Party Trends
1. Pennant Flags
Bring on the cuteness! Pennant flags as party decor will continue to spike in popularity in 2022. Make them yourself with a digital download, or purchase pre-made. Then use them as place setting decor, centerpieces, and favors. They also make adorable present toppers. And the more embellishments, the better! We’re talking total maximalism on ribbons, pompoms, and appliqués. When you think you have enough, add more!
2. Overarching Party Trends
The arch trend will continue to go strong in 2022. Arches can be used in graphics, like on invitations, signs, or table numbers. They can also be actual physical products, such as a backdrop or cake topper. There are so many fun ways to sprinkle in arches throughout your event.
3.Birthday Candle Statements
Move over tall candles. Block letter candles in statement form are the new way to make a birthday wish. Spell a traditional “happy birthday,” the guest of honor’s name, or another sentiment.
Additionally, sparkler candles – especially in shapes, numbers, and letters – are going to be a popular option in 2022.
4. Cake Toppers With Banners
Is it a cake topper? Is it a banner? Well, actually it’s both! Micro sentiment banners strung between two dowel rods are going to increasingly grace the tops of cakes this year. Use the writing space for a name, age, or message for the guest of honor (i.e. Congrats Grad).
5. Balloon Clouds & Clusters
Ironically, balloon arches (see trend #2) are somewhat being replaced with balloon clouds and clusters. Instead of balloons being in a long continuous line, they are layered into dimensional shapes. There are a lot of great DIY balloon kits out there. With a little time (and an air pump!), you can affordably use this party trend at your next event.
6. A Welcoming Party Trend
It used to be enough to have your party welcome sign on an easel. Now, the trend is moving toward a more unique display. Namely, hanging the sign from a metal stand, rather than leaning it on an easel. Etsy is a treasure trove of options. If you host a lot, investing in one that you can reuse might not be a bad idea! Or purchase one and then share with friends when they host events.
7. Neon Signs
Here’s a bright idea; light up the party with a neon sign. Perfect for backdrops and beverage areas. Customize your sign saying – or go with an evergreen message (i.e. Oh Baby for a baby shower). The options and price ranges are endless.
8. Balloon Shapes
Beef up your balloon clusters (see trend #5) with a few balloons in unique shapes. The star burst is probably one of the most popular. But you can also find mylar balloons in tons of different themes to coordinate with your event. You only need a couple of these to enhance a basic balloon display.
9. Light Up Marquee Letters & Numbers
Perfect for milestone birthdays and graduations, large-scale light up letters and numbers will continue to be a highlight of party decor in 2022.
10. Transparent Fillable Blocks
Another large-scale party decor to try in 2022 are transparent blocks. Usually filled with balloons, the boxes can be stacked in different shapes. Some even have letters on the boxes so you can spell a word or name that coordinates with your event (i.e. “one” for a first birthday). Pretty cute, right!?
11. Balloon Mosaics
Of all the party trends, I must admit I’m a tiny bit obsessed with this one. Why? Well, it’s high impact, low effort. And that’s what we’re all about here. Plus, it’s reasonably priced if you DIY the balloons. How darling is the ombre 5? My daughter turns 5 in January, and I’m 99% sure this will be the feature decor at her celebration!
12. Sustainable Disposable
Many party supply companies are offering Earth friendly options when it comes to their disposables offerings. Get the convenience without the guilt? Yes, please!
13. Baby’s Breath is the New Eucalyptus
Baby’s breath is having its moment in the sun. It is absolutely gorgeous in large clumps as centerpieces, especially when dyed to coordinate with the event theme. You can also use it to decorate backdrops, mantles, and overhead installations, to name a few. A quick Pinterest search will give you ideas for days! AFloral is my go-to place for dried floral. Their selection and quality are hard to beat.
14. Streamers Making a Comeback
Ah streamers. It’s nice to see you again! This super affordable crinkle paper decor is truly back and better than ever. No longer only primary colors, it’s now offered in tons of shades, even metallics. And in more intricate shapes. Whether you string them overhead or cascade them down a wall, streamers are another high impact, low effort party decoration trend to try this year.
15. Over-the-Top Back Drops
Party focal points are OTT. And I’m not sad about it one bit! Use streamers (see #14) and balloon clouds (see #5) to create a budget-friendly backdrop. Or, splurge on an arch (see #2) installation made of wood or metal frames and decked out with balloons, florals, neon sign, and pillars.
16. Trendy Mini Piñata Party Favors
Surprise! You can pass on the plastic goodie bag this year, and instead fill a mini piñata with treats. Your party guests will love taking home these adorable piñata, available in tons of different shapes and themes. If you’re wondering what to fill them with, you can my post all about unique kids birthday party favors.
17. Chandeliers are Looking Up
When you decorate for a party, don’t forget the ceiling. It is prime real estate to cash in on for visual impact. Luckily, there are more and more party decor chandeliers available. This gold one I used for New Years Eve last year, and it was a huge hit!
18. The Sweetest of Party Trends: Honey Comb
Last but not least, honey comb decor. Available in many shapes, including the classic sphere. Cluster them for maximum impact. You can even use them to create a bespoke chandelier (see #17)!?
