We have used this hack to hang our outdoor Christmas wreaths for years on our double hung windows. Using just heavy gauge garden wire and a square dowel, these hangers are low budget. I also like that they are minimally visible from both the inside and outside of our windows. The only tools required are a saw to cut the dowel into smaller pieces & a drill to make a hole in each piece for the wire. I’m excited to share how we like to hang a wreath on a window outside and hope it gives you some ideas for how you might be able to do something similar for your holiday exterior decorations.

Hanging an Outside Window Wreath
Supplies
- Wreaths (these are the ones we buy)
- Wreath bows (see DIY video link below)
- Pine square dowel – painted white or to match your interior windows
- Heavy gauge garden wire
- Saw
- Drill
Directions
Step 1: Paint the pine square dowel to match your interior window
Step 2: Cut dowel into pieces, approximately 3″ long
Step 3: Drill one hole in the center of each dowel piece
Step 4: Cut a piece of wire approximately 18″ – 24″ long
Step 5: Wrap one end of the wire around the wreath to secure it in place on the top center
Step 6: Thread the wire through a dowel, fold over, and twist to secure in place
Step 7: Add a bow, if you’d like
Step 8: Open your double hung window at the top, drop the wreath down (holding onto the dowel), and close the window to secure in place. The dowel will be on the inside, and the rest of the wreath and wire will be on the outside. You might need to adjust the length of the wire depending on the size of your windows so they all hit at a similar spot.
