Spooky Styling Tips
If you want a more detailed explanation of how to style a cheese board in general, check out my 3 SECRETS TO CREATING A SIMPLE CHEESE BOARD post. In that article, I go more in depth on the basics than I will in this one.
For the sake of our Halloween inspired cheese board, here are my top tricks to getting a spooky effect:
- Use a cohesive, seasonal color palette as much as you can. In this case, I used black, shades of red, olive green (literally!), and cream. Color cohesion will give your finished product more polish and pizzazz.
- Choose ingredients that could be ghastly in context. For instance, beets on their own are not scary (unless of course you don’t care for beets!) But in the context of a Halloween board, suddenly they look a little like bloody innards (gross – I know!).
- Pick one focal point that drives home the theme. Obviously, it’s the stabbed brie on this board. You can get the look by using thick strawberry jam.
- Pop in a few tiny winks to the holiday, like candy eyeballs resting on dried prunes and stuffed olives. It’s kind of funny how much personality this touch adds without hardly any effort!
- Use serveware that matches the tone. A dark wood board and copper handled cheese knives seemed to fit the overall aesthetic.
