Sometimes it’s fun to mix up present packaging, getting creative and coming up with unique gift wrapping ideas for kids! My 5 year old daughter and I did just that last weekend to wrap a present for her friend’s birthday party.
We got a little crafty and created this fun happy birthday pennant topper, which doubled as a card (we wrote a message on the back of the flag). It ended up being a hit!
Keep reading to learn how to get your hands on this pennant flag printable – along with the craft supplies you’ll need to make it.
Wondering what’s wrapped in the box? Keep scrolling for that too – and other birthday presents for little girls recommendations. (As a mom of 3 girls, I’ve got you covered with lots of ideas!)

Gift Wrapping Ideas for Kids
Favorite Gift Wrap Sources
When it comes to wrapping paper, I usually like to keep it simple. Home Goods and Target are my go-to places to shop for them. They have a great selection and the price is usually right.
For this particular gift, the broken line Kraft paper I used is from Target. Unfortunately, it appears to be out of stock at the moment. đ But I also have this similar triangle print roll and love it!
At the holidays, Target typically also carries Sugar Paper gift wrap. I am obsessed with their black and white prints and like to get a few rolls that don’t have holiday specific patterns (like polkadots) to use throughout the year.
Lastly, Dollar Tree is another terrific resource for wrapping supplies – especially tape, tissue paper, and plain white paper rolls. I also stock up on their unprinted gift bags in all different sizes – usually Kraft, black, and white.
By using simple paper, you have more flexibility in how you “accessorize” the packaging, because you’re not as limited to a color palette.
Multiple Gifts Coordinating Wrapping Ideas
If you’re wrapping multiple gifts, I recommend using paper and packaging that can be mixed and matched across all – to create a cohesive look. For instance, at my daughter’s 5th birthday party this year, we combined Kraft paper and printed paper in neutral tones.
Some packages were just the print, some were just Kraft, and some had a combo of both (like using the print as a band on the larger package in the middle.
To add a little more cohesion, we added gold butterflies to many of the packages. Plus, for some pizzaz on the brown paper packages, my oldest daughter (who has much better hand lettering skills than me!) wrote cute phrases in gold marker.
Did it take extra time to do that? Sure. But honestly I enjoy it. And I love that it seems to make gift opening a touch more special.

How to Make a DIY Printable Pennant Flag
Rather than trying to type out instructions, it might be easier to show you how to construct the pennant flag. Check out this Instagram reel. Although the reel demo is of an Easter flag, it’s the same template as the happy birthday one!
If you want to try to recreate this exact look, here are the sources of the products I used. Unless otherwise noted (“similar”), they are links to the exact supplies.
- Dowel rods
- White yarn (similar)
- Fuzzy gold yarn
- Gold trim

- Butterfly

What’s In the Box?
Are you wondering what’s under the wrapping paper!? My kiddo attending this birthday party decided to gift her friend with a toy she herself also has and loves – a magnetic fairy scene from Floss and Rock – one of the most darling brands around for little kid toys!
On top of the box (in addition to the flag pennant) are ridiculously adorable flower sunglasses. We picked up this exact pair at a local boutique, but you can find similar on Amazon.
As another gift wrapping idea, use a small gift as a topper like we did with these sunglasses. A little more fun and interactive than a bow – right!?
To secure both the flag and sunglasses in place, we wrapped gold trim ribbon around the box twice. We taped one end to the bottom, wrapped it around the box (off center), and then taped the other end under the box.
Birthday Gift Ideas for Little Girls
Need some inspiration on what gift to buy so you have something to wrap!? No worries. I have you covered.
As a mom of three girls, I’ve bought quite a few birthday gifts over the years. Additionally, my girls have been generously gifted many great finds. I shared this roundup in a past Christmas gift guide post, but including here as well since it fits this topic too. Links are available on that post as well if you’re interested in checking out anything.
Also, in a post from earlier this year, I linked up the items we gifted my 5 year old for her birthday. We have every single one of these products in both round ups and can honestly say they are worth every last cent!
