Let’s face it; parties can get expensive. Quickly. Especially when you’re planning a larger banquet-style event, the costs just seem to rack up before you know it. Luckily, you don’t have to sacrifice style for budget. With this Dollar Tree hack, you can create a modern centerpiece for a fraction of the price. Best part? It won’t look like you cut a corner!
Clay or pottery vases are a huge home decor trend. Naturally, that spills over to party decor. When I was planning a baby shower for my sister recently, I wanted to have clay vases with pampas grass as the centerpiece. After searching high and low, I wasn’t finding anything that fit both style and budget. Most vases that were close to what I wanted were at least $15. Which is fine if you need just one. But I needed 12!
So, I turned to Dollar Tree for a solution. And here’s what happened next …

Dollar Tree Hack: DIY Clay Vase
This is how to turn a dollar store vase into a clay vase that looks WAAAYY more expensive than $1.25!
How to Buy in Bulk for Events from Dollar Tree
You may not know that you can buy from Dollar Tree’s website, rather than going into the store. One important thing to note: you typically can’t just buy one item. Rather, you will need to buy in multiples (depends on the product, but usually 4, 12, 24, or 36). The website tells you the minimum. While you may end up with a few extra of a product, you’re likely saving in the long run – compared to if you purchased something similar elsewhere.
This is what I did with the glass vases I bought from Dollar Tree for this hack. They came in a pack of 12. To save on shipping, I chose to pick them up at my local store. In my experience, there typically is at least a week between placing the order and when it’s available for pick up. Just something to keep in mind in case your order is time sensitive!
DIY Clay Vase Supplies
In addition to the glass vases, a couple other supplies are needed for this project:
- Matte acrylic paint (I bought mine at Michael’s – Folk Art Matte 879 Linen Toile)
- Baking soda
- Paint sponges
- Paper plate
- Something to protect the surface you’re working on (I used old packaging paper)
How to Paint Glass to Look Like Pottery
Here are the steps to take for this Dollar Tree DIY craft:
STEP 1: Pour paint onto paper plate.
STEP 2: Add baking soda to paint. I eyeballed it. But if I had to guess, I’d do a 4:1 paint to baking soda ratio.
STEP 3: Using a paint sponge, mix baking soda and paint until completely combined.
STEP 4: Paint the vase exterior (leaving the bottom unpainted for now).
STEP 5: Once the first coat is dry, add a second one.
STEP 6: Once the second coat is dry, touch up as needed.
STEP 7: Then, flip the vase over and paint the bottom.
STEP 8: When the paint is completely dry, add florals and enjoy!
Dollar Tree Hack Centerpiece Reveal
Lastly, now it’s time to use your Dollar Tree hack vase! As an example, here is how I styled it at a baby shower.
Alternating with glass candle holders on gold stands (another dollar store item!), the vases were filled with pampas grass and placed evenly down the center of banquet tables. Under the vases, I used a long-time favorite macrame table runner over a linen-like tablecloth.
Also, the hacked vases were used to decorate the cake table and other vignettes throughout the event. Having a lot of vases to work with allowed this common thread to be woven throughout the space, tying the whole look together. This cohesion really pumped up the overall look and feel of the party, in my humble opinion!
