Sometimes taking the party to others is just as fun as hosting one. Dropping off a boo basket is the perfect way to do just that as a way to celebrate Halloween!
During the spooky season, you can treat your friends by tricking them with a sneakily left basket of seasonal goodies on their front porch.
In this post, I’ll share with you the baskets I put together this year so you can get some ideas on what to include in yours. Plus, I have a free printable for you: a boo basket sign (a critical part of boo-ing!).
Sound fun? Great! I think so too! Let’s get started.

This post is all about how to make a boo basket.
A Fun Halloween Tradition
If you aren’t familiar with boo baskets, here’s a break down for you.
Family A secretly delivers a basket of seasonal goodies to each Family B and Family C
Family B and Family C enjoy their goodies and put a “We’ve Been Boo-ed” sign on their front door. (This prevents them from being boo-ed more than once!)
Then, Family B and Family C each create two new boo baskets and secretly deliver them to two new families. Therefore, four new families have boo baskets to then deliver to additional houses. Now eight are involved, then 16, then 32, etc.
It’s like a chain letter (remember those!?). Just keeps multiplying. Exponential fun!
What to Put in a Boo Basket
Ah, now this is probably the real reason you’re here! Let me share with you what I’ve found for boo baskets this year. Because most of the items are from Target and Amazon, it makes them super easy to shop. However, don’t wait too long! The good stuff goes fast.
Personally, I am not a fan of small plastic toys. No offense to anyone! But I’d rather give fewer nicer things than a lot of not-so-nice things that are likely to end up in the garbage.
Instead, include utilitarian treats:
festive activities, seasonal food, & holiday decorations
Additionally, you don’t have to only gear the contents to kids. Rather, take a family approach and include a few things for the grownups of the household! In this case, I included seasonal beer from a local brewery and Starbucks instant pumpkin spice latte.
Basket | Skeleton | Napkins | Ghost Sugar Cookies | Lesser Evil Popcorn | Pumpkin (Bullseye Playground) | Starbucks Glow-in-the-Dark Halloween Tumblers (not available online – I found mind at a Starbucks in Target) | Starbucks Instant Pumpkin Spice Latte | Local Seasonal Beer | Haunted House Cookie Kit | Spatula + Cookie Cutters (Bullseye Playground) | Halloween Flag (printable coming soon!) | “We’ve Been Boo-ed” Sign
Packaging Tips & Tricks
Presentation is everything! You can make your boo basket look amazing with these simple hacks:
- Create a cohesive look by choosing gifts in a color palette. Choose two or three main colors and one or two accent. In this case, my main colors are black and white, and my accents are pink and orange.
- Make sure your basket allows enough space for all items to be seen.
- To avoid your treats falling to the bottom of the basket, pack the bottom with crumpled newspaper and place a gauze cloth over it to hide the evidence! You can even add some crinkle paper on top of that like I did.
- Place larger gifts in the back and smaller in the front.
- Evenly distribute the goodies so the accent colors are not right next to each other but instead are sprinkled throughout.
