As a mom of three who has planned many-a kids birthday party, I’m here to demystify exactly what you need for a stylish celebration. You know, the ones you see on Pinterest and you’re like – how did they do that!? Whether you keep your kid’s birthday party simple or go over the top, this post is going to load you up with tons of inspiration, ideas, and product recommendations!

Birthday Backdrop

When you host your kids birthday at home, chances are you have home decor to work around. The beauty of using a large party backdrop is that it clearly identifies the party space by covering what you typically have there. Define the area like that, and you will immediately transform the party area into something unique and out-of-the-ordinary!

Happy Birthday Sign or Banner

Next, your kids birthday decoration at home needs a sign or banner. While there are a ton of different directions you could go with this, two trendy ideas are script word balloons and neon signs. Place the sign or banner on your backdrop for a layered, custom effect. Also, don’t feel like it has to say Happy Birthday. Other sentiments (yay, hooray, or a saying that coordinates with the party theme) work too!

Cake Stand

In my opinion, round cakes on cake stands are typically more visually appealing than sheet cakes. Don’t own a cake stand? You may be pleasantly surprised to know there are very affordable options out there! The two I have and highly recommend are linked. Both are versatile and would work for a wide range of birthday party themes. Additionally, I’m sharing my favorite cake servers, which are a bonus must have. Birthday Cake Topper

To really take your kids birthday cake display OTT, add a cake topper. Etsy is a treasure trove of customizable items. In addition, Amazon has tons of generic yet trendy options. Save on your cake by keeping the decorations simple. Then, add a more elaborate cake topper. Here are a couple Amazon and Etsy shops I’ve bought cake toppers from. Birthday Candles

Candles are also a must for any birthday. In 2022, two fun trends are candles that spell out something and candles that are actually sparklers.

Confetti

Confetti really is the gift that keeps on giving. Consider yourself warned: Use it for your kids birthday decoration at home, and you’ll find little bits of it around your house for months after! But it really does add so much extra glitz and festivity to a birthday celebration. If you can handle the mess, sprinkle it wherever you need a touch of sparkle!

Table Decoration

Another large-scale way to really define the space for a kids birthday at home is to decorate the table. Birthday table decorations don’t have to be super complex (although that’s fun too!). Simple formula for success: tablecloth + feature centerpiece + plates/napkins + cups/straws + flatware. Let’s dive into each of these.

Tablecloth

For kids birthday parties, disposable is probably the way most tend to go. However, know you have options for upgraded table coverings that will elevate your at-home celebration. One go-to solution is a low-cost, neutral tablecloth and a paper table runner.

Centerpiece

Centerpieces are a must-have kids birthday decoration, in addition to the paper table runner (see above). That being said, it doesn’t have to be complicated. I love the idea of giant helium balloons on longer strings tied to metallic weights. Not only can you make this dramatic, eye-catching birthday centerpiece in minutes, but it’s cost effective too! (Hint: dollar stores typically carry the balloon weights, if you don’t want to buy a dozen from Amazon.)

Plates & Napkins

Knot & Bow carries adorable plates & napkins for kids birthday parties. Because they are neutral designs, they work with a wide range of birthday themes. Meri Meri is another go-to plate and napkin resource in kitschy themes and modern designs. As an example, I used their products for my daughter’s 5th birthday. Don’t forget to grab plates for both the meal and dessert!

Cups & Straws

In the past, I have tended to shy away from paper cups. Instead, I opt for clear plastic. They seem a bit sturdier, and look extra cute with a fun straw!

Flatware

Go-to flatware for any kids birthday is this bamboo set from Amazon. I’ve used these personally at many events. The wood tone looks super nice and blends seamlessly into lots of different party themes. Plus, it’s a more sustainable choice.
