If you are researching birthday party ideas for 5 year old girl, you tapped the right link! This post will give you tons of insights into how you can plan a special celebration for the little girl in your life!
Five is a big deal! It’s half a decade of her bringing light to this world. She’s officially a school ager, and probably getting ready to start Kindergarten. If your little one is like mine, she loves being independent, but is still small enough to want to be held and carried.
It’s a special transition time in her life, and one that should be celebrated big! And that we did in my home this year when my youngest daughter, Evelyn, turned 5.
Evelyn is the youngest of 3 daughters. So, planning birthday parties for girls is nothing new to me! lol
In this post, I’ll show you how we celebrated Evelyn’s 5th birthday. Along the way, I’ll share some tips and ideas that you can consider incorporating into your own celebration.
Even though the theme we chose was fairy garden, you can definitely take pieces and parts and translate it into your own theme.

Birthday Party Ideas For A 5 Year Old Girl
Choosing a Theme
The first step to planning a birthday party for 5 year old girl is decide on a theme. In our case, we picked fairy garden.
There are so many other cute ideas out there, though. For instance, here are a few other themes we either used over the years for our school aged daughters – or seriously considered using:
- Superhero
- Tea Party
- Gymnastics
- Dinosaur
- Stars
- Rainbows
Birthday Party Decor
Next, you need to select party decor. Besides the actual decorating, this is one of my favorite parts of party planning! I love scouring the market for unique combinations of items to create an eclectic and collected look.
Which is probably my number 1 tip for you: Try to not buy everything from the same line of party supplies. Your decorations will look much more elevated if you can pull items from a variety of brands.
Another tip is to turn everyday items into party decorations. For instance, at my daughter’s 5th birthday I used arrangements of dried florals throughout the event, fairy lights, and preserved moss along with chiffon table runner for the centerpiece.
What is extra great about that is that you end up with items you can repurpose after the event!
In conclusion, here is just about everything I purchased for Evelyn’s 5th birthday party decorations:
Birthday Party Backdrop
A dramatic and large party backdrop will make your party decorating SO much easier.
I know it seems counterintuitive, but one big statement decor is
1) usually less work, and
2) visually more impactful than a bunch of little odds and ends decorations scattered everywhere.
For this fifth birthday party, my handy husband DIYed an arch backdrop.
If you’d rather not mess with a DIY, there are a lot of arch backdrops available on Etsy. Or you could choose a different look all together and go with a hoop, a garden wall, or balloon cloud with streamers. The list could go on and on!
But the point is to pick one focal point. Then build your party around it.
Once you have your backdrop, then add accents to bring it to life. In this case, we used balloon garland and dried floral arrangements. (Check out the section above for links to all of the dried florals I used!)
I also grabbed a few things from around our house to add additional dimension, including a round gold nightstand to serve as a cake table and our entryway rug to ground (haha) the entire look.
Don’t forget to have a chair for the guest of honor! For example, this adorable rattan chair is from a local boutique, but here is a similar option. You can add decor to the chair. We kept it simple and used a pompom pillow in the party color palette, for instance.
Make-Your-Own-Wand Activity
Next, for many birthday party ideas for 5 year old girl, the themes lend themselves to wands, which is a great party activity.
Gather a selection of ribbon, tulle, yarn, appliqués, and dow rods. Then let your little fairies, princesses, superheroes, mermaids, etc. pick and choose their own decorations. Voila! This makes a great party favor too!
For Evelyn’s birthday, it was just our family. So, we pre-made the wands and put them in a vase. Then, Evelyn distributed them to us during the party (with a lot of flair, pomp, and circumstance as the fairy queen, of course!).
DIY Party Printables
To take the idea of creating a custom look even further, use party printables. You can incorporate these in a variety of ways, including:
- Invitations
- Pennant flags
- Cake topper
- Banners
- Favor tags
- Straw flags
For Evelyn’s party, I used printables for her cake topper and pennant flag, which ended up on top of one of her presents. Here is a link to another post where I made similar flags as gift toppers, which you can get as a free download when you sign up for my newsletter!
How to DIY Party Pennants
DIY Pennant Flag
Supplies:
- dowel rod
- ribbon and tulle
- glue stick
- appliqué or embellishment (optional)
- number pennant flag printable
First, cut the pennant flag printable. Pre-fold along the line (where the color is slightly lighter).
Then, run glue stick along the back of the small folded part. Place dowel rod in the fold and wrap the fold around it.
Once that is complete, it’s time to decorate! Tie 3 to 5 different types of ribbon under the flag. Attach an appliqués to cover the ties.
Finally, make a tulle pompom and place it on the top of the dowel rod.
5th Birthday Gift Ideas for a Girl
Gift Wrap Ideas
We always go a little overboard for our kids birthdays. Evelyn’s 5th was no exception.
On top of that, I love to choose gifts that are somewhat on theme – and wrap them accordingly! (Because presentation is everything, right!?) In this case, fairy garden.
The gift wrap I chose was by Abbie Ren Illustrations in a darling boho rainbow and floral print. Her Etsy shop is pretty much like a candy store for anyone who loves stationery!)
Kraft paper with embellishments were used for the other gifts. My oldest daughter, Olivia, who is quite good at lettering wrote fairy themed sayings on them. And then my middle daughter, Isabelle, added star accents. (I love how my girls get into making each others birthdays extra special. Makes my mama heart SO happy.)
Gift Ideas
If you need a smaller budget friendly gift for a 5 year old, 100% recommend the Floss & Rock fairy magnetic scene. The box actually has a drawer for the small pieces, and the lid pops up to an easel. It’s designed beautifully.
Next, the roller skates by Circle Society are extra great (not just because they are adorable) but they actually expand and contract to several shoe sizes.
As another idea, since 5 is about when kids start loosing teeth, a tooth fairy pillow, like this one from Mon Ami, makes a great birthday gift.
Another gift example, I couldn’t resist the Olli Ella woven trunk and bucket bag. Admittedly, they weren’t Evelyn’s favorite gift she opened. But they are practical. For example, we are using the trunk to hold her dress-up accessories. (Update: Evelyn is now almost 7 and STILL plays with the woven trunk. She uses it to play pretend and also when she spends the night at her grandparent’s house. So cute and well made!)
Speaking of dress-up, this rainbow costume. It’s a show stopper. Evelyn’s sisters gave it to her before the party so she would have it to wear. Meri Meri makes some of the best quality kids costumes around. Definitely worth the splurge, in my opinion! (Update: Almost 2 years later, this is STILL one of Evelyn’s most worn costumes. She has used the heck out of it playing inside and out – and even wore it as a Halloween costume one year . It has held up beautifully.)
