Celebrating New Year’s Eve at home can be just as festive and fun as going out. A small bash with your immediate family doesn’t have to feel like Plan B. In fact, with these 10 ideas for how to ring in the new year, you might make it Plan A on repeat!
Let the countdown begin!

This post is about New Year’s Eve at home.
10. Dress Up
Look good, feel good. Set the tone for your at home New Year’s Eve celebration by dressing the part! Dig out an oldie-but-goodie sparkly outfit from the back of your closet or order something new. Then add a fun red lipstick (this one has been my go-to favorite for years), and let the party begin!
This is the skirt I wore on Christmas Eve, but it would also be perfect for New Year’s Eve! I wore it with a cream sweater and gold heels (from Target!) – but you could definitely take it a bunch of different directions! Just do a Pinterest search for “copper pleated skirt outfit” and you’ll have ideas for days!
9. Serve Festive Fare
Create a menu of your family’s favorite finger foods. Then serve them buffet style – with cute plates and napkins, of course!
And what New Year’s Eve celebration is complete without gold sequins? Add some into your party decor with this table runner, which can be used as a base for your meal. Cute, right!?
8. Decorate with Disco Balls
Does anything say New Year’s Eve more than a disco ball? I think not! You don’t have to install a temporary fixture in your ceiling to get the effect. In fact, our family has these portable disco balls (which my daughters LOVE). They even have a remote to control the settings.
Additionally, disco balls can be incorporated on your table decor as centerpieces. Fill a few apothecary jars or tall clear vases for a simple, festive centerpiece.
7. Countdown the Hours
Set up an interactive way to count down the hours. One of my favorites are these helium balloons, which are popped every hour leading up to midnight. Target also has a similar option.
6. Make a Dance-Worthy Playlist
Leading up to the big night, make a playlist that will keep your New Year’s Eve at home party hopping. You might just find yourself in a dance-off with your kids! If you prefer pre-made playlists, check out Amazon Music for a bunch of curated options.
5. Play Virtual Trivia
Connect with other home-bound families and friends by organizing a virtual trivia game. There is a lot that goes into this set up, so it’s definitely something you’ll want to research and plan well in advance. But well worth the effort!
4. Play Charades
One of my daughters’ favorite family games is charades. We usually come up with our own rules and cards (i.e. paper slips folded in half and picked out of a bowl). Or you can purchase the game with pre-made cues. Either way, prepare for a lot of laughs!
3. Make it Sparkle(rs)
Sparklers don’t have to be just for 4th of July. Oh, no no! They can also be a super fun way to add pizzaz to your New Year’s Eve at home. Bundle up and celebrate with the warm glow and fizzy sound of sparklers. (Safely, of course!)
2. Set Up a Champagne Bar
Prep for midnight with a champagne bar. Don’t forget non-alcoholic bubbly for the kiddos!
1. Thank the Old, Bless the New
Lastly, take a minute to offer for gratitude for the year that has passed. And ask for a blessing for the one to come.
