The best season is here, and I’m celebrating by creating a fall cheese board! Since I’m not alone in my love of autumn – or cheeseboards for that matter! – I wanted to share with you how you can also build a seasonal board.
To take some of the mystery out of creating a cheese board, I made a time-lapse video for you. In real life, this board took about 20 minutes to make. Additionally, I had to fuss with some of the ingredients moving them around until all of the puzzle pieces fell into place.
I tell you this in case you’re feeling intimidated or nervous to try making your own cheese board. Rest assured, mine never come together perfectly – and certainly not on the first attempt!
My advice? Jump in, get creative, and be willing to revise and improvise.
Plus, it’s cheese! No one is going to complain! They’re just excited to eat all the yummy food you’ve gathered and displayed.
If you want some additional tips on how to create a cheese board, I wrote a post on the three secrets to success.

This post is all about fall cheese board.
Fall Cheese Picks
This cheese board features harvest-inspired ingredients, including autumn flavor cheeses.
To start, I selected cheese that reminded me of fall in both color and flavor, all from Trader Joe’s. Trader Joe’s is my absolute favorite place to buy cheese for charcuterie boards. They have a great selection that is also reasonably priced. (Not sponsored, by the way!)
This is what I picked up for this board:
- Holland smoked gouda cheese
- British mustard & ale cheddar cheese
- Port Salut semi-soft cheese
The smoked gouda and mustard-and-ale cheeses especially remind me of autumn – bonfires and Oktoberfest beer.
In addition to fall-ish flavors, the deep, red-brown smoked gouda and pumpkin-orange port-salut rinds are a nod to the fall color palette.
Supporting Ingredients
To complement the cheese, I added a variety of meats, crackers, nuts, and seasonal produce. Apples play a prominent role, since they are most certainly “of the season.”
When I was a kid, I remember my grandfather would eat sliced sharp cheddar cheese on his apple pie. Not until I became and adult did I realize the absolute genius of this combo! Cheese + apples = LOVE! Don’t believe me? Try it! As an example, the tangy Granny Smith apple plus the mustard and ale cheddar cheese is seriously so good!

Serveware and Decor
Styling this board was a lot of fun! In case you haven’t noticed, I kind of love rattan and pampas grass. (Like the rest of the world right now, it seems!)
With that in mind, I pulled out my rattan cheese knives (similar) and decorated the coffee table with a simple matte white ceramic vase filled with a pampas grass arrangement. The pampas grass is a recent Amazon purchase. Compared to others I’ve bought, this one is especially great because it comes with a few varieties to give the arrangement some depth and contrast.
The cheese board was built on a round, gold tray from Crate & Barrel. The exact one I bought is sold out, but here is a similar one in gold. To add height and natural tones, a wooden pint basket lined with Kraft food paper held dried apple crisps.
Next, I put fig butter in a black mini bowl. These bowls are under $2 each and worth every penny. They are perfect for containing jams and olives, for example, on cheese boards.
Lastly, I set out matte black stoneware small plates and pretty marble napkins. When you find a good napkin, repurchase! That’s exactly what I’ve done with these from Harlow and Grey.
